New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon praised the Indian government’s “incredibly generous and welcoming” approach as he announced the elevation of bilateral ties between the two nations. Luxon, who is leading the largest-ever delegation of business and community leaders accompanying a New Zealand PM on a foreign visit, emphasized the immense potential for growth in trade and economic cooperation between India and New Zealand.
In a video shared on X, Luxon expressed his excitement about the partnership, noting that the Indian government’s openness speaks to its desire to deepen relations with New Zealand. He also highlighted the significant contributions of the Indian community in New Zealand, particularly as the third-largest ethnic group, the largest source of skilled migrants, and the second-largest source of international students.
During his five-day visit, Luxon will serve as the chief guest at the 10th edition of the Raisina Dialogue, where he will deliver the keynote address. He also revealed that New Zealand and India have agreed to begin negotiations for a comprehensive Free Trade Agreement (FTA).
Luxon’s visit follows productive discussions with Indian officials, including External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, who expressed appreciation for the New Zealand PM’s efforts to deepen ties between the two countries. Both leaders reaffirmed their shared goal of a stable, secure, and prosperous Indo-Pacific.
Luxon will meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu during his visit, where several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) are expected to be exchanged.
